                Crash diets recommending weight loss in just few days looks enticing but it has been observed that people tend to put on more weight than they have lost as soon as they resume their normal lifestyle due to a yo-yo effect where in body tends to go back to its previous weight where it was more comfortable. Hence avoid going on a crash diet for a quicker weight loss. On the other hand, losing 0.5-1 kg/ week is a healthy weight loss that stays maintained over longer time.

 

2.     Check if it is sustainable for a long time: 

                Choose a diet that is more suitable for your current lifestyle. Choosing a diet which is very different from the foods that you regularly eat will be easy to start but very difficult to sustain. Instead making healthy modifications in the food patterns you currently have can make the diet easier to be a part of your new lifestyle.


3.     Choose balance over elimination: 


                Diets that recommend eliminating a particular food groups like carbohydrates as well as diets that recommend to have only fruits or only vegetables for quicker weight loss should be avoided as each food group has its own benefits and nutrients associated with it and eliminating a particular food group means refraining your body from those nutrients. Instead chose diets that prefer balance wherein portion controls are suggested for each food group so that you don’t miss out on nutrients.

 

4.     Read and understand what your body is saying: 

                You are the master of your own body so try to understand the symptoms that it is showing you. If a particular diet regime is causing more harm than good its better to avoid it. Symptoms to watch for include extreme fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, nausea, extreme constipation, food allergies, consistent headaches, dehydration, etc.

5.     Consult an expert: 

                Finally, before changing your dietary patterns it is always best to consult a nutritionist, dietitian, health coach or your physician as a particular diet that suits someone else might not be a right fit for you. Blindly trusting information, you find on websites or following a particular celebrity diet might cause you more harm than good. It's better to seek advice from the ones that are trained for the same.
